How to play
How to play Machia
Seven short steps. You move. The arithmetic captures. A piece moves in any of eight directions. It never jumps, and it never lands on an enemy. One piece on each side wears a crown: that's its leader.
Step 1
The pieces
Every piece is a number. Its shape says how far it moves. A Round moves one square, a Kite two, a Banner three. Always in a straight line, and always exactly that far.
- Roundmoves 1
- Kitemoves 2
- Bannermoves 3
Step 2
Equality
End your move next to an enemy of equal value and it falls. You don’t capture it. The arithmetic does. Your 9 stands beside their 9. 9 = 9, so theirs falls.
Step 3
Sum
Two of your pieces on directly opposite sides of an enemy, their values adding to its. Both flanks have to be yours. Your 6 and your 9 stand either side of their 15. 6 + 9 = 15, so it falls.
Step 4
Eruption
Line up on an enemy with empty squares between you. Your value times the number of empty squares is theirs, and it falls without ever being touched. Three empty squares between your 9 and their 27. 9 × 3 = 27, so it falls from a distance.
Step 5
The machine
In the daily, one enemy piece moves after every move you make, advancing on your crowned piece. It never dodges and it never stops. Their 4 is advancing on your crowned 4. Each move you make, it takes a square. Two moves and it arrives.
Step 6
The forge
Land on your own piece and the two become one. The values add, the larger shape wins, and a crown carries over. Build the number you need. It can’t be undone. Your 9 lands on your 7 and they become one piece, a 16. 9 ⊕ 7 = 16, and nothing falls.
Step 7
The leader
Each side has a leader, marked with a gold ring and a crown. Take theirs and you win. Lose yours and you lose. The bar above the board names the piece to take and how many moves you have.
